Agra is popularly known as the City of architectural wonders' and true to its name visitors to Agra are greeted with impressive ancient structures which adorn its cityscape. Most reach high to show off the wealth of Agra to other cities in the area. One such impressive structure is the Buland Darwaza.
The Buland Darwaza is a massive gateway to the entrance to the city of Fatehpur Sikri on its North-eastern side. Believed to have been constructed in the year 1575, this 15 storey structure was built to commemorate Emperor Akbar's victory over Ahmednagar and Khandesh in Deccan and Gujarat respectively.
The term Buland Darwaza can be directly translated to High Door'. And true to its name this striking monument magnificently reaches to the skies and it can be seen even from a distance. To enter the city visitors have to pass through this amazing archway.
The approach to the Gateway is by a steep flight with approximately 42 steps and from there the structure soars 54 feet above the ground reaching 140 feet into the sky affording an impressing and intimidating character. Known as one of the tallest gateways in the world the Buland Darwaza portrays a typical Agra style as it is made out of red-sandstone. Its beauty and grandiose-ness is complemented by the marble dcor.
The overall architectural style is a blend of Persian and Hindu with the front and pillars adorned with Koranic inscriptions. The inner faade's calligraphy work is a piece of art and is of a style which is unusual to India and not found anywhere else in India. Visitors may look out for the famous inscription on the structure credited to Jesus Christ which states: The World is but a bridge, pass over but build no houses on it'; and it so ironic that the kingdom was abandoned about 15 years later.
