subject: Effective Group Facilitation [print this page] Effective Group Facilitation Effective Group Facilitation
This Facilitators Debrief Format is designed to give you direction and will also assistif your debrief needs to be brought under control. Debrief questions are open ended so as to initiate discussion between the group and facilitator also between one another. Most importantly, remember you are the facilitator and not the leader therefore not there to be giving answers/responses but to get conversation flowing... thiswill act as the catalyst for uncovering solutions and for change within the group/organisation.
Issues that may arise
Leadership Time Management Planning Roles Played - Chosen Communication Mistakes Listening Failures Maximising Resources Success Encouragement
Debriefing Questions ask specific open ended questions.
What did you do? / What happened first? / Then what? Etc What did you do that didn't work as effectively as you would have liked? What did you do that worked really well? Given what you have identified as being effective /ineffective, how would you approach this differently? Can you see how this relates to work? What would be a specific example of any of these issues in the workplace?
Bringing Closure This is dependant upon the groups focus, time constraints & also how the group performed.
Facilitator states - "This exercise has stimulated some interesting issues to surface. You may want to take the opportunity to discuss & reflect upon what has been learnt, over the next few days or over lunch etc." Well done! Facilitator states - "Now we will move on to the next challenge/activity and you can demonstrate what you have learnt." Facilitator asks - "What was the most powerful thing that you learnt from this exercise?". Ask each participant....can give one word or a sentence, whatever the participant feels comfortable with.
If all else fails and you are at a loss for words try to stick to some very basic debrief questions;
Simple debriefing
1. What happened? 2. What worked well? 3. What did you learn? 4. How can you apply this to your work?
Key issues that may arise during a teambuilding session.

Finally, if you are really struggling to get your group discussion happening try this; "on a scale of 1 - 10 how would you rate yourselves for what you've just done (activiti)" wait for response and then continue with "what would it take to get you towards a 10 out of 10"? or "what would you do differently to increase your score"?
Above all make certain that you all have fun... people will remember the way you made them feel, not what you have said!
