subject: Decorating Tips For Brightening Up A Dark Room [print this page]

It is unrealistic to think that every room is going to have giant, sweeping windows to brighten up the space and give it an open feel, but that should not condemn a room to unnecessary darkness either. Depending upon the color choice and accent pieces, as well as the lighting you choose, your room can appear bright, even if very little sunlight is present.

Types of lighting

If you have any windows at all, keep them free from dark, heavy fabric, and opt for a lighter material that lets in as much illumination as possible. If you opt to have lights mounted into the ceiling and are up for a little more of a renovation, recessed lighting is a good choice. Or you can opt to find a style of track lighting that fits your purpose and allows you to adjust the intensity of the light by the type of bulb you use. This type of track lighting allows you to shine each pod on the area of your choice to play up room features with any intensity of light.

You may opt for more dramatic, mood lighting that draws the eye up the side of the wall vertically and diffuses the light to create a certain mood. Wall sconces or a light strand that follows along the inside of the molding can create this visual.

Do not forget functional lighting to assist with everyday tasks such as table, floor or desk lamps.

Keep It Light

Choose colors which will bounce light off of the wall and back out into the room such the lighter pastels or pale neutral hues on the color wheel. Keep all wall paper uncomplicated and simple, and if you want a punch of color, let your area rug handle that.

Another way to offset the neutral color scheme if to let the furnishings stand out with either a deep toned wood frame or darker fabric choice.

Make the Most of Your Accent Pieces

Pick from light enhancing accents in metal, crystal, and glass to accentuate and add brightness to a given room, and stay away from dull surfaces that reduce perceived light. Glass top tables, or metallic rimmed lamps, and crystal keepsakes reflect light around the room and make it visually more appealing and spacious.

If your theme calls for it, let your accents take the lead with vivid color hues displayed through wall art, area rugs, and throw cushions, and bring in a more natural feel with plants or flowers. Wall sconces that are placed below mirrors can bounce light around, and you can use reflective surface materials such as mirrors or color tiles to frame your fireplace and make it a brighter focal point.
