How To Dreadlock My Hair

In this article, I will explain two methods that I suggest using when it comes to putting dreadlocks in your hair. There a few different methods out there, but these two will give you the best results.

First, your hair should be about 2-3 inches long for the best results. If you haven't gotten to that point yet, check out my post on How To Start Dreadlocks.

Dreadlock My Hair - Twisting

Twisting is the method that I used when I decided to dreadlock my hair. Unfortunately, it only works with people who have of an african decent...to explain it best. The thicker the hair, the quicker your dreadlocks will start to hold their form. Here are the instructions:

-First, wash and clean your hair.

-Start with a 1-2 inch section in the back left/right part of the neck and work your way across, securing each section with a small rubberband. Do this for your entire head.

-You can use a heavy wax to massage thoroughly through each section while twisting the hair clockwise or counter-clockwise. Which ever way you pick, make sure you do it in that direction for your entire head. If you don't, when you retwist them later you will start to twist some of them loose.

-I suggest using rubberbands at the tips to promote your ends to close.

Using a good soap and wax will help your hair dreadlock faster. I suggest the kit from Dread Head HQ. It has everything that you need to start your dreadlocks:

Dread Head HQ Dread Dreadlock Starter Kit

- Wax for starting them and keeping them nice

- Soap for gettin'em super clean so they stay healthy and yummie

- Ocking accelerator to prepare the hair for dreading and help your dreads lock up faster

- Rubberbands for separating the hair and holding the roots and the tips untill they mature

- And a strong metal tooth comb for dreading and tightening. Those who have used it agree. Its tha bomb!

Dreadlock My Hair - BackCombing

Backcombing is a great option if you have straight hair. If you have hair of african decent like mine, I suggest using the method above Twisting. Here are the instructions to start your dreadlocks using the backcombing method:

- Using a dread comb, start backcombing each section starting somewhere in the middle, going to the scalp. As you do this, your hair will begin frizzle and create knots to the spot that you have backcombed to.

-First, wash and clean your hair.

-Start with a 1-2 inch section in the back left/right part of the neck and work your way across, securing each section with a small rubberband. Do this for your entire head.

-Backcomb your hair all of the way to the tips, or you can stop somewhere before the tips of your hair for some additional style. If you are not sure what backcoming is...here's a good video that I found on youtube.

-You can use a heavy wax to massage thoroughly through each section while twisting the hair clockwise or counter-clockwise.

-I suggest using rubberbands at the tips to promote your ends to close.

As with twisting, using a good wax will help smooth the frizz and help your hair lock faster. I suggest getting the dread kit from Dread Head HQ. It has everything in it that you will need to start your dreadlocks.

Dreadlock My Hair - I'm done!

No matter which method you choose, you will need to maintain your dredlocks. Sure, this means that you won't have to pay for a haircut for a while, but it doesn't mean that you can neglect your hair. I mean, you can if that's the look that you are going for. In my case, I would rather have them looking like they were brand new! Very simple steps to maintaining your dreadlocks can be found in my article How To Maintain Dreadlocks on squidoo.com.
