Age of Conan Addons
Age of Conan Addons

Frequently, I hear, or read, people asking where the addons are in Age of Conan. They might have found a couple of addons, but not many, and they are wondering whether there are any addons to this game.

When it was asked, in 2008, if the game will give the possibility for addons, Athelan, a developer of Age of Conana answered (mske kan du stte det flgende i kursiv, det er en direkt citat)

"There is no support for player made addons. Opening up for player addon's opens up the code and game to exploitation and hacking security wise in a very big way. We decided to put all the hooks we could into the interface and allow full re-skinning in XML but no open language for the players to create their own modules."

And in short, it is what happened. The game gives the possibility to have a couple of addons which let you customize your user interface, and you can have a little script, which runs beside the game and register DPS and other statistic from a raid group, but except that and from a couple of other small things, you won't find in AoC the same type of addons like you find them in World of Warcraft for example.

You can make scripts that will make small things easier for you, but you won't be able to make scripting like you may know it from WoW, where you can use an automatization of a casting sequence and in which order you wish to use certain spell, etc. To be honest, I am happy for that. First of all, because I play this game to have fun, and I don't see the fun in having all my abilities put in one button that I just repeat constantly. And from my days in WoW, I find it quite boring to compete against bots or machines instead of competing against people. I guess it is easier to be bored when you only press one button instead of thinking and playing the game.

If you consider the fights in Age of Conan, you will see that mobs, like other players can change the place where their shields, their protection, are. That means that if you attack a mob or another player by hitting on the right side, and the next move is, for example, straight ahead. If your opponent switches his shields, so they are all straight ahead (some very good PvP players will know, when you start a combo, what the next move is, and will shield accordingly), then your best move is not to go on with your combo blindly, but to switch combo and make another move. This would be impossible to do if you were using a macro or an addon.

Other addons, like gathering addons, are not necessary to use. You can see on the map, where the different resources are, and you certainly will enjoy the game more. In Khitai, for example, there are digging places. If you have a shovel, you can dig there, and you will find something, which can have more or less value. These mounds do not shine or attract attention in any way. You have to be attentive to the surroundings to see them. That means that you can easier immerse yourself in the game. You can easier live inside the Age of Conan. If you were using an addon that showed you were all the mounds were... Where is the fun in searching and finding? Where is the pleasure of enjoying the landscape? Doesn't it begin to transform the game into a job?

Finally, addons possibility means robot-possibilities, means eventual professionals destroying a very good game.

So no, for the time being, there are few other addons than few cosmetic addons. Thank you Funcom. The only addon I use is Mirage Interface because I prefer to have all my buttons in one place and all, and that's it.

You can find MirageUI and other avalaible addons here.

And if you think there are not many, you are right!
