subject: The Purpose Of Brain Injury Rehabilitation [print this page]

More than one million people suffer from traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in the United States every year.

A lot of them are mild cases where the patients are told what they should do, what medications they should take and what exercises they need to do. After which, they are on their way to a 100% recovery.

However, there are severe cases that require brain injury rehabilitation. Victims of severe traumatic brain injuries may experience:

Decreased level of consciousness that may lead to coma

Severe headache that do not go away

Repeated vomiting and nausea

Convulsions

Difficulty in choosing appropriate words in conversations

Inability to construct sentences

Loss of memory

Alterations in the mental state of the person

Severe TBI cases usually do not fully recover from the effects of the injury, although significant improvement could be gained from rehabilitation.

The goal of brain injury rehabilitation is to help the patients improve their functions to a level that is as close to normal as possible.

Through rehabilitation, the victim may gain the ability to at least take care of themselves inside their home.

After that, the rehabilitation will raise the level and try to get the patient go back to performing substantial gainful activities like going back to work.

However, these rehabilitation treatments are very expensive.

A mild to moderate case of TBI with no debilitating effect may already require a patient to undergo an 812 week program. That would already cost the patient a couple of thousand dollars.

Victims with severe cases will definitely require a longer program and sometimes it may even last a lifetime.

The victim may also undergo surgery especially if there is some pressure discovered inside the skull that is damaging the brain.

If not taken out early, the pressure could lead to secondary injuries that will aggravate the victims condition and may even lead to death.

The surgery itself will already put a dent on the victims finances. The long term rehabilitation treatment he/she needs to recover may end up putting the victim deep in debt, especially if the injury prevents him from taking a job and earning some income.

To avoid these expenses, the best option is still prevention.

Since TBI is usually caused by accidents, it will do well to avoid accidents or try to lessen the damage you may sustain if it cannot be avoided.

Here are some tips you can follow to prevent accidents that may cause TBI:

Since majority of TBI cases are results of motorcycle accidents, the best way to avoid TBI is to wear a helmet at all times to protect your head.

Install safety features in your cars like seatbelts and airbags (including side-impact bags).

Use federally approved child seats for infants and children.

Prevent slip, trip and fall accidents by installing handrails on stairs, removing tripping hazards like throw rugs and installing window guards on elevated areas.

If you have been injured as a result of an accident, you may seek compensation from the liable party for the expenses and losses you sustained.

Contact a brain injury lawyer to know your options.
