Battle:LA strips away the green screen - removing the wizard of CG from his appointed seat of power. In his place are concrete, rebar, and mountains of rolling fire and smoke. Folks ready for their popcorn entertainment to head outdoors and get away from the sound stages and mo-cap warehouses will find
themselves thrilled that this is a film filmed in the real world, using real world effects - the alien invasion thingy is just a cool backdrop.
First and foremost this movie is a WAR MOVIE. Which isn't to say that Liebesmen and Co. didn't put much thought or creativity into these new alien invaders. It's been a while since we've seen an alien species and their technology come off as... cool? (is it still cool to use that word to try and attempt and encompass everything you liked about an art decision or creature design or special effect array into a solid block of... coolness?)
Liebesmen's invaders are kept purposely at a distance. We don't know who they are or what planet they're hailing from - we just know what the spooky screams of their guns sound like during an ambush. How much of a city block one of their attack ships can burn away in a single missile volley.
That they move and grab cover with tactical precision. That they're not interested in anything close to a peaceful solution.
In most movies this might play out as thin - in Battle: Los Angeles this detachment keeps us focused on the chaos a situation like this might generate. Aaron Eckhart and his Marines have no idea what they're up against,
and frankly neither do we as we follow them on their tour through what's left of Santa Monica Boulevard. It gives the flick an immediate, visceral momentum. It makes the experience appropriately uncomfortable.
Once things kick into gear Battle:Los Angeles is one of the few action/science fiction films in recent years to surrender its pace to anything but the fight at hand. The camera work - much like Hugh Hefner's current sex life -
is mostly hand-held and shaky. If this kind of thing causes your vestibular system to do cartwheels I'd suggest dropping strong plugs of Dramamine into your popcorn.
When we do finally get close to an alien in this film Aaron Eckhart's Sgt. Nantz butchers the still breathing creature in an attempt to discover its vital organs - where to put a bullet and how to ultimately discover a way to kill these creatures.
