Juliette Binoche's character, only named "She", is able to listen to a few minutes of the lecture before her young son
interrupts her. She heads off to a cafe with him, passing along her number in the hopes that James will give her a call. He does, and they spend a day together, discussing everything under the sun dealing with love, aging, and marriage. It's quite the mental journey.
But again, what is it all about? I still can't tell you. Nor does the film want me to. It simply wants you to consider yourself, your o
wn needs, your own selfishness. The crux of the tension comes from a simple question: Have She and James met before? Is this a 15-year-old romance or the awkward first courtship everyone goes through? Is the whole piece just a metaphor for
how relationships age and grow? Is our perception of our mate hopelessly uninformed? Can the different rhythms folks bring into coupledom survive adversity? That was five questions in a row, ridiculous, but that's the
strength of the film. It's a movie that eats itself, changes itself, and asks the largely unanswerable. And it does it all in three languages blended together: English, French, and Italian. It does so stylishly, with long organic cuts of dialogue to feast on, while maintaining an elegance and beauty of form.
Binoche is incredible in this role, going through a range of emotions every five minutes, from her sublime and silly pouting all the way to genuine and wounded sadness. She does that thing every great woman does, saying,
"Sure, no problem," with her words while her shoulders and mouth give away her displeasure from 100 miles. The film highlights the contradictions found in every union, how you've got to change together, how stalwart a bond must be to last, how a love can feel both effortless and suffocating within the same conversation.
One criticism of Certified Copy is that it's a smidge stop-starty as they take these long pauses to reset the scene. It's probably
necessary to allow the audience to process but it comes off a bit like cheating. Real life doesn't have time-outs. Additionally, it's probably too intellectual for some, but I can't see championing mediocrity just so everyone's comfortable.
