It's hard for me to believe that it's been nearly 30 years since Berkeley Breathed's Bloom County premiered.
Bloom County was a comic for the ages - as funny, intelligent and relevant as Doonesbury, but a little more bizarre, and with a bit more heart. Berkeley Breathed scored a Pulitzer Prize for his work...then decided after a mere nine years that he'd had enough.
I have to admit, my initial thought was that this looks like just another generic CG animated movie, but after watching the first trailer for Mars Needs Moms I'm actually somewhat interested. The story revolves around a 9-year-old kid named Milo who must head to outer space to rescue his mother, who has been kidnapped by Martians. Apparently they have a shortage of motherly types on Mars to raise their own children,
so they've been stealing them from Earth. Seth Green voices Milo (it's actually kind of creepy to hear him do a little kid's voice), and the cast also includes Dan Fogler (doing his best Jack Black impression), and Joan Cusack.

The animation is being handled by Robert Zemeckis' studio ImageMovers Digital, and it will be their final film before the studio is shut down. As you can see from the trailer, it is using the same performance capture technology as Beowulf and A Christmas Carol, which gives an interesting realistic look for such a fantastical adventure.
I'm hoping this will be a bit of a throwback to '80s family adventure films (ie. Explorers) in the same way that Monster House was back in 2006. Mars Needs Moms hits theatres on March 11th, check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
