Mathematics is one of the most important subjects taught in our schools. Math needs a lots of practice as compared to other subjects. More practice kids do using math worksheets better they get at math.
In this presentation I would talk about use of fractions worksheets to practice fractions skills learned from your teacher or tutor. There are the following tips on how to choose the best fractions worksheets depending on your grade level and understanding level.
1. Starting at grade one, fractions are the integral part of whole math career. Hence this is very important that kids in grade one learn the basic fractions such as recognition of halves, wholes and quarters. Teachers and parents can use examples from daily life for this task.
For example, parents can cut an apple into two equal pieces and introduce "half" to their kids. A pizza can be cut into four equal pieces to introduce "Quarter", "three quarters" or "half" to the young kids. Make sure limit this knowledge to basics only in grade one.
2. Once kids are familiar with the basic visual fractions such as half of an apple, three quarters of pizza; then this is the best time to introduce geometric shapes such as circles, triangles and rectangles etc. to kids and basic fractions worksheets can be used for this purpose.
In these basic fractions worksheets, kids should learn to cut these shapes into two equal parts and three or four equal parts. Here, in grade two, kids can learn how to represent a fraction in three different ways.
For example; one half can be drawn using a circle, it can be written in words as "one half" or using numerals "1/2".
3. Once kids understand how to write fractions using different methods, it is good time to introduce them to equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions are those which have the same value.
For example, if a pizza is cut into four equal pieces then if a person ate two pieces of it. Then this person ate half of the pizza and which can be represented by two ways. First way is "2/4" as this person ate two pieces out of four pieces total. The second way to show how much pizza has eaten is "1/2" as that person have eaten the half of the pizza. Hence, "1/2" and "1/4" are equivalent fractions.
4. The next level is comparing fractions. Remember to compare two or more fractions, the best method is to make the denominator same and fraction with the greatest numerator is highest in vale.
5. Once kids are in grade four they can start learning adding and subtracting fractions with same denominators.
6. Kids in grade five should have good knowledge of greatest common factors and hence they are ready to learn how to reduce fractions into lowest terms.
7. In grade 6 kids should have mastered how to reduce fractions into lowest terms and how to add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators. If kids learn about improper fractions and mixed numbers in grade six, it will be a great advantage in higher grades.
8. Once kids upgraded to grade seven and eight, these two years are very critical to learn multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. In grade eight the all about fractions is completed and kids are ready to apply these skills in other math concepts such as in algebra, geometry or trigonometry.
This is all about to learn fractions from grade one to grade eight and further applications of fractions. Kids, parents and teacher should be very careful to learn right fraction skill at right time. Fractions worksheets can be very helpful to master all the fractions skills.
