Adjusting Your Attitude Can Alter Your Life

By Michael Griep

We've heard it all our lives, from the time we were kids through adulthood. "Change your attitude" is the advice we're given when or behavior needs to be changed. It's one thing to hear it, it's quite another to understand the importance of adjusting your attitude, and how it can alter your life.

Adjusting your attitude is the end result, but there need to be certain conditions in place for a long term attitude adjustment to positively change your life.

A. Passion

Think about times in your life when you had a burning passion for something. Whether its sports, a career, or a relationship, when passion exists, the effort and attention you gave fueled your day and more than likely your life was positively altered. There's an expression "Find a job you love and you'll never have to work another day in your life." Passion drives your attitude and allows you to see through obstacles because the vast picture is what really matters.

B. Sense of Purpose

Anyone searching to positively alter their attitude needs a sense of purpose and accomplishment to reach for and believe in. When you feel your actions are affecting a desired goal, your attitude is aligned with a positive purpose. When this occurs your life is consumed with a sense of direction and positive achievement.

C. Believe in Your Work

Whether we like to admit it or not, we spend a great deal of our lives working our chosen occupation. Regardless of how you make a living, your attitude good or bad, will spillover to other aspects of your life. There was a time in history when people were limited with career choice. Today, it is simply not the case. Your only limits are limits you place upon yourself. Often people will choose the comfort of misery, rather than the uncertainty of change. The only way to alter your life is to adjust your attitude. The fear of change needs to be overcome. Any action to alter your life is far better than inaction. Identify what you truly want to do and make steps towards that change. In the long run, your attitude will change and your quality of life will improve.

D. Don't be Consumed by Negativity

Negative thinking perpetuates a negative attitude. Fortunately the opposite is true as well. It is impossible to improve the quality of your life if it is filled with negative thoughts. It's like trying to hold the ocean back with a broom. Focusing on excuses and inaction are drivers of negative thinking. Action and personal accountability can replace negative drivers but you need to focus on consistency. When you do, your attitude is pointed in a positive direction and your attitude will follow.

Begin each day with positive focus and attitude. Concern yourself with only those things you can control, and do not allow those things you cannot control to affect your attitude. Altering your life is a journey which never ends. Take along a positive attitude and the journey is very enjoyable.

Good Luck

Mike
