The EDF Energy London Eye, also known as the Millennium Wheel, is a 135 metre tall Ferris wheel situated on the banks of the River Thames in London. It is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe, and the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom, visited by around 3.5 million people each year. It was erected in 1999, and is described by the operators as the world's tallest cantilevered observation wheel (supported by an A-frame on one side only - The spindle holds the wheel structure and the hub rotates it around the spindle). It is the fourth tallest structure in London after the BT Tower, Tower 42 and One Canada Square in Canary Wharf. It was conceived and designed by Marks Barfield Architects and was launched in 2000. The attraction is located at the western end of Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River Thames in the Borough of Lambeth, between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge. The wheel was constructed in sections which were floated up the river Thames on barges and assembled lying flat on piled platforms in the river. Once the wheel was complete it was raised into an upright position by a strand jack system. The Eye is a top tourist attraction, and an extraordinary piece of engineering design and architecture. It has won over 75 awards for national and international tourism, outstanding architectural quality and engineering achievement. It is a versatile venue for corporate events. off-site meetings, an office party, entertaining clients, or a large scale functions such as an awards ceremony.
