Sometimes we get so caught up in going to the gym we forget about the benefits of exercising outside. There are many benefits of getting outside and leaving the gym behind. If you're not incorporating exercising outdoors in to your workouts you are cheating yourself out of some great benefits. When we leave the confines of a gym and head outside we are doing our bodies a favor. While there are many benefits to leaving the locker room behind and heading outside here are just a few to get you started.
Benefits of Exercising Outdoors
Mental Well-Being
There was a recent study that showed an increase in mental well-being when exercise was performed outside. When we exercise outdoors it revitalizes us, releases tensions, and improves our mood.
Vitamin D
There have been many studies lately showing that increasing the levels of Vitamin D in our bodies is very beneficial. And there is no better way to increase those levels than to get out in the sun.
Fresh Air
It's always nice to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Sometimes the air in buildings and houses can be polluted and stale. Getting outside gives our lungs a chance to inhale fresh air. Obviously if you can get out away from the city and in to the country the improvement is going to be even greater.
Not So Boring
Let's face it. Running on that treadmill for 45 minutes can get quite monotonous. Spinning on a cycle for an hour is very boring. There's a lot to see outside. The terrain is varied. All of this will keep your mind busy and thinking. I find when I am outside exercising I am able to do some really good thinking and clear my mind. Inside we usually either watch TV or listen to music to pass the time while exercising. Listening to music and watching TV keeps your mind busy. It's nice to head outside for a jog and let your mind have a break from the distractions.
Free
Gym membership fees seem to creep up in price over the years, just like everything else. Want to exercise for free? Head outside. Some activities of course require equipment. If you're already going to the gym you most likely have a good pair of running shoes. With those shoes you can walk, run, jog, or hike outside.
The different activities you can perform outside are nearly limitless. One thing to keep in mind is to pick activities that get your heart rate up to receive the maximum benefit. A few activities to try are running, walking, hiking, and cycling. While you're outside and trying to change up your exercise routines don't head to the park and run laps at the track. Instead find a route through a neighborhood or a good long set of stairs to run. If you enjoy walking, find a nice trail somewhere with varied terrain. Hop on your bicycle and explore different areas you usually don't get to visit. Purchase a mountain bike and find some fun trails to ride.
As you can see, it makes sense to get out of the gym occasionally and head outdoors. Obviously you will not be able to replace all of your gym activities with outdoor activities. You'll still need the gym for weight lifting and for those days the weather will not cooperate. Also while exercising outside remember to be safe. Watch out for traffic and stay well hydrated. It's always safer and more fun to work out with a partner as well.
