Weatherization means energy savings to homeowners

The term "weatherization" is used a lot these days, but have you ever wondered what it really means...to you and your home? Well, the answer is simple. The weatherization process saves energy by repairing and improving the energy efficiency within a structure itself. The improved energy efficiency will reduce a home's heating and cooling bills.
The goal of the weatherization process is to increase a home's energy efficiency, safety, and comfort.
Improving energy efficiency means eliminating, or reducing, the amount of energy leaving a home, while at the same time reducing the impact that outside air and weather conditions have within a home. It also includes repairing or replacing old heating and cooling systems, improving insulation and air sealing, and taking what other necessary measures are needed to lower the use of energy.
The techniques employed within the weatherization process are sometimes called weather proofing.
The weather proofing techniques include eliminating drafts by weather-stripping; replacing, or repairing broken windows and exterior doors; patching small holes and voids in walls and roofs; performing furnace or air conditioner maintenance, repair or upgrade; improving insulation in attic, walls, floor and perimeter; and insulating water heater pipes or furnace ducts.
Not only can weatherization reduce home energy costs, but it can protect the physical structure of a home from nature's elements. For example, when a home is damaged by wind or rain, it is important that the structure's windows and doors maintain an airtight seal to prevent against further damage and energy loss.
Why is weatherization process so important?
Once again, the answer is simple. Not only does weatherization help retain a home's value and energy efficiency, but it actually can grow your investment.
According to the Weatherization Assistance Program's Technical Assistance Center, "Combined savings for energy and non-energy benefits in 2008 show weatherization returns at $2.72 for every $1 invested."
At the most basic level, weatherization includes the things done to a home to help reduce energy use. In addition, weatherization creates a more comfortable home, and results in a lower utility bills.
