As a graduate of the School of Textiles I often wonder how my favorite textile products are made. The production of children's textile products especially intrigues me, because the products have to be safe, soft, and affordable since they are easily outgrown. Under the Nile is a company who makes a wide variety of infant products using organic cotton, including training pants.
What are the key components of Under the Nile training pants?
Under the Nile Training Pants use several different products.
Their traditional clothing line uses fabric made with Egyptian organic cotton.
They are continually adding new styles and fabric choices made with organic cotton.
A covered elastic waistband is used for increased comfort and ease.
The training pants have a sewn in lining for accidents.
The fabric used is a knit fabric, using a fine yarn.
It is important to note that Under the Nile training pants are knit instead of woven. Knit products inherently stretch better than products which are woven. A little bit of stretch is especially important in the use of children's clothing.
Their organic cotton fabric is made using Egyptian organic cotton. The organic cotton uses products that would be wasted and thrown away, and turning it into a resource. This waste to resources mentality makes their fabric very eco-friendly. I'm not sure exactly how the yarn is produced but I would guess they use the spinning method. The spinning method of yarn production takes tufts of raw materials, in this case, cotton, and spins it through a machine where it comes out as a yarn. Spun yarns can be made thick or thin. Thinner yarns produce a more desirable garment, because it is softer than a fabric produced with thick yarn. Organic cotton fabric is produced the same way that conventional cotton fabric is, but uses organic cotton instead of cotton grown with pesticides. The organic cotton fibers are probably spun into yarn, which is then knit. Knit products can have a smoother surface feel, or hand, depending on the yarns that are used in the process.
