Try to visualize yourself fully relaxed and about to sleep. Imagine it up until you fully feel it inside you that you really want to rest and let your body float in mid-air or in water. After a few minutes, you will soon be snoozing.
Focus on your breathing. Fast breathing makes your body more active while slow deep ones relaxes your body making it more suitable for rest and relaxation. Inhale through your nose and exhale through the mouth.
If you are unable to sleep after 20 minutes in, get out of bed and do something else. If you associate your bed with something else other than sleep, your body will treat the bed as a place for other activity other than sleep.
Although a boring book might help you fall asleep, but your mind would still be racing through countless images from the book that you have read. This makes your mind active thus preventing you to fall asleep.
Dim your room or put your lights off when you go to bed. Light is a factor when it comes to sleep. People fall asleep faster when their environment is dark or there is minimum light against a room filled with bright lights.
Put your worries away into a piece of paper. Worried about that presentation you have for tomorrow and the dread is keeping you up all night? Write it down as if you are talking to yourself. This will relieve the stress and anxiety building up inside you and help you loosen up your mind from worries.
If you find yourself restless on your bed, you can spend the time being restless thinking about what you have done for the day and all that has been accomplished. Have you done anything good or have you helped someone in need that could really use it? But do not go beyond as to planning what you should do tomorrow or you will end up awake until the morning. This is the time to relax just a bit before another busy day when you wake up.
