Physical Music Distribution - Is It Really Necessary?

One of the questions you have to ask yourself while thinking about the possibility of signing to a record label is if physical distribution is important to you. It's one of the few things labels can do far, far better than any independent artist.but is it really important?

With the ability to sell your music all over the world in a digital format very easily with no high printing or distribution charges, it is becoming less and less necessary to have your CD in retail stores. However, it does provide legitimacy to be seen in stores, which is probably of greater benefit than the money you would make from selling your CD's to the stores. That extra boost you get to your name only helps if you're a nationally-established act, though. If you're an independent artist, it could help to have your CD available in some independent record shops, Hot Topics, and Best Buys around your area.but beyond that, stick to digital!

Digital distribution is a fantastic alternative and is sufficient for most bands. Unless you are one of the exceptions to be noted in the next paragraph, you will be just find utilizing the power of digital distribution to massive e-stores like iTunes, Rhapsody, eMusic, and Amazon. The best distributors can get you into several hundred mp3 stores, which is more than enough to reach your audience, no matter where they may be.

There is an exception to this rule. Well, two. One aforementioned exception is the huge national artist who makes a lot of money having their CD in Wal-Mart. If it makes you money, go for it. The other is the elderly crowd who doesn't use the Internet much. If your fanbase is a younger, tech-savvy audience who you communicate with through social media, digital distribution is enough for you and helps to reduce the financial risk you have as an artist.

Lesson learned: Most bands have fanbases in the age range to be familiar enough with computers to go buy their music on iTunes or a store like it. Don't spend a ton of money you don't have on something that may not bring a lot of extra benefit! Digital is the easy, affordable, highest-utility way to go.
