How to Beat The Heat This Summer

So your AC broke, it's the middle of July and there's not enough money in your savings to fix it. Or, maybe, you never had one. No worries, you've come to the right place, I have a few tips to share.

First, turn on all the ceiling fans and any box fans, window units, etc. and open the windows, butkeep your blinds and drapes closed. This helps tremendously. If you're lucky, a breeze will come and create a nice cross breeze.

Second, make sure you have plenty of lightweight cotton and linen fabric clothing. These fabrics breathe and help you sweat less. If it gets too bad, put a cotton shirt in the freezer for about 30 minutes or so. (You could also wet it first to make it extra cold.)

For a quick cool down, run some coldwater over your wrists and feet. These are major pulse points and this tip will make you feel a lot better quickly.

This one is an old stand-by. Head down to the lake, ocean, pool, whatever it may be. Make sure you put on sunscreen! The last thing anyone wants is to be hot AND have sun poisoning. Not good.

Going to the ocean or lake is a fun and inexpensive way to cool down in the summer. Photo credit to Findstuff22 on Photobucket.

Eathealthy. Ever notice how after a big milkshake and side of fries you don't feel your best? Sluggish and hot? Try eating fruits, vegetables and other healthy items instead. You'll keep cooler, and let's face it, the heavier we are, the harder it is to stay cool.

Drink all the water you can get your hands on. It will cool your core body temperature down, and hydrate you more thanGatorade or soda.

Open the bathroom window when you shower. It will ventheat and humidity outside, instead of back into your house.

Get yourself a dehumidifier. It will make it feel like it's cooler in your house by filtering out the moisture.

Cook only with themicrowave. Using the oven or stove makes the kitchen hotter. But by using the microwave, the heat stays inside and won't filter out into the rest of the house.

If it gets unbearable, find a friend or family member to stay with. While you're there, help out. Do the dishes, clean, etc. Show them you are thankful for their kindness.

Go to the library, cheap movie theater, mall, or anywhere that has freeair conditioning. But try not to buy much, or anything. Just remember, that's money that could go toward an AC!

I hope these tips can help you out thissummer.

Oh, don't forget about pets! Put a few pieces of ice in their water every few hours, and make sure they have access to cool spaces, such as the basement (if you have one).

Stay cool,

Kayla.
