Using a computer, one can store large volumes of data in very less space. It is one of the most important advantages of making everything computerized. Also, when the information is stored on a computer, it is very easy to access it and find whatever we want from it. But when it is stored on paper, to search from large volumes of data becomes very difficult.

As most of the operations are getting computerized nowadays, the need for storage space increases. Sometimes, the memory space that comes with the computer is not enough to store all the data. This is where external hard disks come into the picture. They are nothing but a type of hard disk which is connected to the computer by means of a USB or any other cable.

The external hard disks are placed outside the computer in an enclosure of its own. The primary purpose of this unit is storage of data. It can be used to store any amount of data depending on the size. Several configurations are available, starting from 80gb to a few terabytes.

The information that is stored on the external hard disk is very safe and secure as it is protected from the attack of viruses like the Trojan virus and other such malicious software that infect a computer through the internet. So if you want to protect your data and keep it in a very safe place, you can do so by placing it on the external memory.

When this was introduced, the size was very big and it has to be placed outside the computer. This is the reason why it got the name external hard disk. However, with the development of science and technology, the size of the hard disk has become comparatively much smaller.
