subject: Can Liposuction Improve My Face? [print this page]

Facial surgery is very popular in AmericaFacial surgery is very popular in America. In 2008, facial surgeries ranked just after liposuction in popularity for men, and just after breast augmentation and lipoplasty in women. There are a lot of different procedures that people can undergo to enhance their faces, including nose jobs, work on the eyebrows, face lifts and skin tightening.

One thing that not everyone knows is that liposuction is also a very popular and very successful way of surgically treating the face. Most people think of butts, bellies and thighs when they think of liposuction, but in reality the surgery can be used on the face just as well.

Liposuction removes excess deposits of fat from the body. It uses special hollow tubes called cannulas. During the surgery, which is usually performed under local anesthetic, a surgeon makes an incision in the target area. Then, the doctor attaches a cannula to a vacuum device and inserts it into the fatty tissue of the target area. By moving the cannula back and forth in the body, the surgeon breaks up and suctions out the unwanted fat.

Because the cannulas used are so small (many of them measuring only millimeters in diameter), lipoplasty can treat even very delicate areas, such as the face. Because the cannulas are so small, the incisions made can be equally small, which means that there won't be large and awkward scarring on your face. Typically most liposuction scars are very small, and they can even be virtually invisible sometimes.

The most popular areas on the face for treatment tend to be the chin, and the cheeks and jowls. Because many people accumulate excess fat in these areas as they age, in some cases removing the fat can make a person appear more youthful.

However, liposuction is a real world procedure, and it isn't for everybody. For some people cost is prohibitive. For others, their body simply isn't a good fit.

For example, liposuction tends to work best if you are generally healthy and have good skin elasticity. If your skin is too loose, a lipoplasty may actually make that problem worse. Also, people who have genetic conditions or diseases that make it more difficult for them to heal may not be able to undergo the procedure

Even for the people who do qualify, the surgery isn't a magic wand that can make everything better. As a surgery, it involves some side effects, some scarring, bruising and some recovery time. The best surgeons tell their customers to expect improvements, but not perfection.

If you are considering getting facial liposuction, consider meeting with a surgeon in your area for a free consultation. The surgeon can give you a better idea of what is possible, what is likely, and whether or not you're a good candidate.
