The most natural way to level your character in Age of Conan is to quest. Especially at a low level the levelling is pretty fast just by doing the quests. You can level from 1 to 20 in Tortage in a matter of hours, four or five hours questing can do it.
You can see if a Non-Player Character (a NPC) has a quest for you because he will have an exclamation point (a !) over his head.
If the ! is grey that means that you are too low level to receive the quest, come back when you have levelled a bit. However, let's say that the NPC has a nice golden exclamation point over his head. That means he or she has a quest for you. You click on the NPC and receive the quest. It is generally a little cinematic.
Before you go questing and killing things, note two very important things.
The first thing is, check out the color of the quest by opening your quest-log (press J) and look at the color of the quest.
The color code is important as it will tell you whether the quest is adapted to your level or not.
If the quest color is grey, that means that it is a low level quest. You won't have any problems doing it, and you might even not have many experience points by killing mobs.
If the quest color is yellow, that means that the quest is adapted to your level. Go for it.
If the quest color is orange, that means that the quest is possible to do, but it will be challenging. It might be difficult.
If the quest color is red, that means that it is meant for when you are higher level, don't risk it.
Beside the name of the quest in your log, you might sometimes see a shape of three people. That means that this is a group quest. The color code is still valid, so if you see a group quest in grey or even yellow, it may be possible for you to solo it. But to be honest, it is not often worth spending time on soloing. In AoC, when they advise you to be in a group, they generally mean it.
Second thing is the map. If you press M, you will see the map appearing. There, you will see a little arrow. That's you. Besides that, you will see colored circles and crosses. Crosses mean that you have to speak to someone or pick up something or kill someone there.
The circles are people you have to find, who go around in this area, or if you have to kill 20 of this or 15 of that, you will find them there, or if you have a number of things to collect (flowers, armour, bones or anything else).
The cross shows also the person or the place, you have to hand the quest back to.
So by helping yourself with the map and the quest log, you can very quickly plan your way through the quests.
Note that while you are questing across Hyboria, you will also find Bulletin boards with papers on them. These are quests too. Generally, these quests aren't to deliver to anyone. If it is to kill 15 bandits, for example, you will receive your experience points, money and eventual reward when you kill the 15th bandit.
