Tenerife, the Entertaining Centre of the Canary Islands

How can many millions of tourists be wrong? Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands. It has an island population that is almost half the total of inhabitants for the whole Canary Island chain. While part of the country of Spain, Tenerife is totally autonomous, with its capital in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The island is home to El Teide, the 3rd largest volcano in the world and Spain's highest elevation. Centuries ago Tenerife was referred to as the Island of Hell by ancient travellers who may have experienced volcanic eruptions during their visit.

Today tourists come to enjoy the many beaches and other attractions that Tenerife has to offer, and experience why its present nickname is "Island of Eternal Spring". The beaches that do exist on the island looks like they are made of black sand do to the volcanic influence. All other beaches are manmade with imported sand brought in to create these tanning pleasure spots. The island of Tenerife has a number of wonderful choices when looking for housing during your stay. If you are planning to visit for any length of time, come during February and enjoy the 27 days long Carnivals held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This celebration of life consist of many events including the Queens election, parades showing off the colourfully vibrant and creative costumes, as well as a spectacular battle of street bands competing to be chosen as the best.

For those who visit during other times of the year or are just looking for a more relaxed view of the local wonders can find it all in a day trips distance from your hotel. One such wonder to visit by many is the Black Pyramids located a short drive outside of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This structure became noticed during the early 1990's and attracted the attention of a Norwegian anthropologist and was eventually noted to be aligned to the winter and summer solstice. Upon further studies of these pyramids an eight meter long cave was discovered under one pyramid that contained many artefacts dating back the late 600's to 1000 AD. This archaeological site is still relatively new allowing for the excitement of possible more discoveries which helps to bring in more visitors hoping to experience the thrill of the search. All this can be enjoyed nearby the hotels in Tenerife when you visit the Canary Islands.
