People who are subjected to the noise of snoring - as a sleeping partner or someone in the household - know that it can be very disruptive to your sleep and annoying as well. Many times the person who snores is not even aware and does not awaken, but more often others are affected by this malady.
Snorers come in all shapes and sizes from children to adults and the volume and intensity of snoring varies as well. Some people make very little noise while others can be very noisy and those are the ones who disturb others and themselves when they snore.
Some simple remedies can be effective like drinking nettle tea which is a cure recommended by herbalists. Often snoring is caused by allergens in the air so this tea will help to reduce the inflammation caused by the pollen allergens. Changing the sheets, pillowcases and other bedding frequently will help as well as keeping carpets vacuumed to reduce the allergens in the air.
Other easy alternatives are the use of ear plugs or a machine that plays relaxing music or natural sounds like rain, surf or others can reduce the sounds of the snores while not eliminating the problem. Decongestants and nasal corticosteroid sprays are also used to reduce nasal congestion to allow better airflow.
More costly remedies include breathing devices that reduce the snoring in various ways. They include a tongue retaining device that prevents the tongue from collapsing into the air passage and blocking it. Another is an electrical stimulation device that is used on the throat muscles to keep the airways clear. These devices can be uncomfortable however, causing jaw joints to ache and saliva in the mouth requiring repeated swallowing.
Children often have their tonsils and/or adenoids removed because they are too large or otherwise impeding the airways. Other surgeries also remove excess tissue in the throat, soft palate or the uvula. Nasal repairs can also be done if you have a deviated septum or other problem that often improves breathing and thus alleviates snoring.
