subject: What Is Hypnotherapy? [print this page]

When people think of hypnosis, many people just think of the shows where a hypnotist has people from the audience do silly things they would never do otherwise. However, there are a number of more useful things that can be done through hypnosis by a properly trained professional. Hypnotherapy can be helpful in treating a number of different conditions.

Hypnotherapy can be used in order to make medical treatment easier. Examples include child birth and surgery. Those who are trained in self hypnosis can use this technique to minimize their fears about child birth or surgery, as well as to lessen the amount of pain that they feel during the event itself. These are considered medical uses of hypnotherapy.

There are also psychotherapy uses of hypnotherapy. Conditions that can sometimes be helped with hypnotherapy include anxiety, depression, insomnia, and conditions which require behavioral modification (such as stopping smoking, losing weight, and stopping other bad habits). Different conditions might require different techniques, and it might be good to find a therapist that has experience treating the condition that you are suffering from.

Hypnotherapy will not work for everyone. Not everyone is able to be hypnotized, which is a condition that is required for the treatment to have a chance to work. It does not work for everyone, but as many as 74 percent of people who have tried the treatment have been helped by hypnotherapy. If you are suffering from a condition that might be treated by hypnotherapy, it would be worth a try, especially if you haven't found another treatment that is effective.

If you decide that you want to give hypnotherapy a try, there are some things you should consider. You want to make sure that you go to a professional who has been properly trained to provide this sort of treatment. Some practitioners are licensed psychologists or psychiatrists, others practitioners may have other areas of interest. Learn what is involved in training and certification in hypnotherapy: California, for example, has both schools and certification programs for hypnotherapists. Finally, seek out a practitioner that adheres to a strict code of ethics. Doing so, will protect you and make your experience a successful one.
