The Uncomfortable Truth About ADHD Being Misdiagnosed - Time For Straight Answers

The problem of ADHD being misdiagnosed is a serious one because it means that children and adults are simply taking unnecessary drugs for a condition they do not have. They may simply have some other condition and their health and lives are being compromised.

Let us look at the reasons for ADHD being misdiagnosed. Did you know that there are many conditions and diseases which have very similar symptoms to ADHD? Other experts have pointed to the fact that many cases of ADHD are not ADHD at all but merely a learning disability. If that is true, then we have a lot to answer for in that we have so blithely accepted the fact that medicine can be the answer. It has crippled many a childhood.

Inspectors found that many thousands of batches of Paxil were missing their main ingredient so those poor depressed patients were taking a placebo!

Another shocking fact is that the FDA can only get round to inspecting about 2% of the so called pharmaceutical plants under their control which are located in China and abroad. So much for the safety of drugs which are strictly regulated!

As regards ADHD being misdiagnosed, we must keep in mind that diagnosis should be properly carried out and that the various questionnaires are filled in and that whole process is done by a paediatrician, a child psychologist or a doctor who has a proven track record in treating ADHD.

Once we are sure that we have excluded the possibility of ADHD being misdiagnosed and that we have a definite diagnosis, then we can think of what the treatment alternatives are. We know all about the side effects of psychostimulants so we should bear these in mind if we are tempted to go down this route. We should also remember that the effects of these meds will wear off after three years so they are certainly not a long term solution at all.
