Ugg By Name But Not By Nature
Ugg By Name But Not By Nature

Think of ugg boots and you may think 'Ugh' but you would be far from right! In fact you could not be further from the truth as theses boots are the very latest in high taste and fashion.

Sometimes a word can sound the same as it means. This is called onomatopoeia and for the greatest number of examples of this you only have to look at children's comics with all those words that are used to convey a sound, like Zap when someone is slapped or pow for a fist hitting someone. Often the word does not even exist in the English language, or come to that, any other language, but the meaning is in the saying and that means it is better said out loud.

So ugg boots is really the opposite of onomatopoeic, although funnily enough the word boot is also used to suggest a kick so the word boot on its own could be described as an example of onomatopoeia from the suggestion of the sound it makes when hitting the intended target! An example is to put the boot in or, the boot was on the other foot. In both cases it means an aggressive piece of behaviour.

Boots have recently made a spectacular comeback in the past year or two. The variety of styles particularly for women is staggering. It wasn't that long ago that a boot was something to be worn in the winter months alone but now they are an all year round statement.

For men there was a time in the nineteen seventies when a boot represented real aggression and this manifested itself in 'bovver boots' which were the preserve of the skinheads. These gangs of hooligans were usually more testosterone and mouth than real harm, but as with any groups the bigger the gang the more they egged each other along until peer pressure forced one of them into acts of violence. An example of how weak they were behind the aggressive faade could be gauged by their tears of anguish if you stamped on a gang member's cherry red polished boots and caused a serious scuffing.

Walk down the high street today in somewhere like West London and you will be guaranteed to see more women wearing boots than shoes. Yes, it is winter now and so there are not going to be a large number of open sandals and lightweight shoes about, but even so, the variety of boots means there is little chance of duplication of the same make or style on the same pavement. A women's nightmare is surely bumping into others, whether friend or foe and encountering the same hat, coat, dress, shoes or boots! There is a often told story of a certain Prime Minister arriving at a function where a senior member of Royalty was in attendance. Both were wearing almost identical dresses and both reacted in horror. It was presumed that both would admonish their respective dressers but in fact only one was blamed. The royal dresser of course was not blamed,; the politician's dresser however, was blamed by all sides for not enquiring beforehand what the other would be wearing!
