In fact, in the south of the Tulum Real Estate area is the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean. Sian Ka'an offers a beautiful, protected setting for Tulum residents and visitors alike to enjoy 23 known archaeological sites (some 2,300 years old), kayaking, wildlife life watching - with at least 103 mammal species and 336 known bird species. The reserve currently is home to about 2,000 residents.
Currently the Ministry of Agrarian Reform (SRA) is taking steps to further protect the natural setting of the Sian Ka'an. The Ministry has begun the measurement and demarcation of about 1 million acres of national land located within the Reserve, to make them available to the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP). The purpose of regulating the are of allegedly national lands is to make them available for management and care by the Natural Protected Areas (CONANP)
In 1986 Sian Ka'an was declared a Biosphere Reserve and in 1987 its area of approximately 1.3 million acres was declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Besides the attractions already mentioned, the area is an important wetland area, it is a nesting ground for a large variety of wading birds, and its beaches are a key nesting location for two endangered species of sea turtles.
