Fabric Roman Shades; What to look for when buying

When shopping for Fabric Roman Shades or Custom Roman Blinds, there are a few areas to look out for.

We know what it is like to spend a lot of money and then make the wrong decision because we didnt know all the questions to ask, or just what to look for.

So when you are shopping for custom roman shades, whether they are black-out roman shades, relaxed roman shades or double roman shades,

here are the points you need to consider:

Fabric Choice:

Soft or Pliable Fabric

Make sure you are using a soft and pliable fabric. The more stiff the fabric, the more wrinkles you will see.

Silk If you want silk, then I would strongly recommend having your shade interlined. Interlining is a medium weight soft flannel that goes between the silk and the lining which gives body, fullness and richness to you custom roman shade.

Lining:

In most cases I would recommend off white lining. As your shade will face the outside, any other color will fade over time.

Proper Design:

There are many styles of fabric roman shades. Your best dressed windows use beautiful custom roman shades in conjunction with overdrapery and valances. The custom roman shade covers a wide gamut of styles; from flat romans, soft fold romans, balloons and clouds, hobbled and relaxed roman shades. All of these are considered fabric roman shades. The style you choose should enhance your overall design scheme.

Mechanisms:

We often dont think about how we want our custom roman shade controlled, but you have generally 2 options; the cord-lock, or the standard pulley. The cord lock works much like a mini blind and you can stop the shade at any point. This is a great mechanism. The standard pulley must be tied around a cord cleat in order to hold the custom roman shade up.

How to measure:

And lastly, if you are going to make or order your own custom roman blinds or shades, then you need to measure carefully. Measure across the top and bottom of your window and from side to side for height, since no window is plumb. Then allow about for additional clearance on the width, but not on the length.
