In my house a funny thing happens all of the time. Every time that I am watching sports and leave the room for even a minute or so, when I get back the TV is on another channel. I'm sure that it is not my lovely wife changing the channel, so I need to take all of these TVs to the shop and get them checked out.
Regardless of what anyone thinks, I think that sports are a healthy thing and can be educational. As a matter of fact, this next little trick that I am about to share, I learned from the sports pages. It took me a little while to figure this out, but I noticed myself always clicking on stories just because the title or head line sucked me in.
Now what they do is to give you just enough information to make you curious and not enough that you really know what the story is about. Here are 2 examples from today.
Kobe passes Olajuwon - now right away, you assume that Kobe would be Kobe Bryant. The first Olajuwon that comes to mind is Hakeem Olajuwon, but he is retired and played a different position than Kobe. So then I clicked on the story because I wanted to know how Kobe had passed Olajuwon. The answer was that Kobe had passed Hakeem on the all time scoring list. Had the title given me that last little tidbit, I would have had all of the information that I needed and would not have clicked to read the article.
Ex - NFL star's fight over in first round is the second example. Normally, they would not have given a clue to who the ex NFL start was until you click on the article, but this time they let on to who he was by offering a picture of Herschel Walker. Once I knew who the ex NFL star was, the next thought was that I hope Herschel, who is now 48 years old has not tried MMA and embarrassed himself by being knocked out in the first round. So guess what, I clicked on the article and to my relief, it was Herschel who had TKO'd the other guy in the first round.
I hope you get the point. Don't give up all of the info in the title. Make it a cliff hanger and people will click just to get the conclusion. If your article is teaching people something don't forget to ad a 'How to' at the beginning.
