Definition: Plaque is a soft deposit on the teeth. This deposit consists of large amount of bacteria (greater than 1010 bacteria per milligram) with additional particles of foods, proteins, and cellular debris in the deposit. The bacterial colonies produce localized inflammation and infection, leading to gum infection (gingivitis), abscesses, and eventually tooth loss. Additionally, these bacteria can enter the bloodstream and colonize in the heart valves and or liver, leading to larger health complications.
Your pets get them too, and since February is pet dental month it's time to get your pets checked. Have you ever had it? Of course you have and so have I. It's that non-stoppable, unable to think, blinding, throbbing toothache that only a dentist can fix. It's essential for pets that already have health issues or are handicapped.

There are plenty of dental aids on the market and plenty of gadgets for your pets to chew on to help prevent the volcanic explosion your wallet will feel when the Vet says we need to pull a few teeth and there are natural products made from a select seaweed and sprinkled on your animals food that was originally sold for human consumption to aid in plaque build-up. The product claims to soften the plaque and kill the bacteria that cause plaque so even if your pet has plaque build-up already it will soften it so you can brush the animal's teeth to remove it.
It's an ongoing battle and does not mean that a Veterinarian visit should not be done, on the contrary, it is always a good idea to check with your Vet, have regular check-ups and see what they say about any new product you are going to give your furry family member.
