When I do almost anything, I prefer simple to complicated. So I like the idea of using simple SEO techniques to help boost my place in the search engine results. It's also easier to get simple techniques right, which is a bonus.
Simple SEO technique #1
Make sure that each page on your site has a unique and relevant title tag. If you're not sure what that means, ask your tame techie but essentially it's the title of the page that gets shown in the blue bit at the top of your browser (the bit you probably ignore) and, more importantly, the title of the link in the search results. Make it relevant to the content of the page and make it enticing to click on. Don't make it appeal to a boring accountant!
Simple SEO technique #2
Make sure that each page on your site has a headline (H1 tag). This is to help the search engines realise what your page is about and - at least as important - it tells your potential customers that they've reached the most relevant page on your site for their needs. If the headline shows up too large on your page for your design sensibilities, talk to your techie to use CSS to control the size of the headline and the font it's shown in.
Simple SEO technique #3
Get links back to your site. Backlinks show Google and the other search engines that your site is part of the world wide web community, rather than being an island that's ignored by everyone else. There are good ways and bad ways to use links as one of your simple SEO techniques but, done correctly, backlinks are an essential part of your SEO armoury.
