SEO sounds complicated and, if you're in a competitive industry, it can be, but really simple SEO is a lot easier and gets good results.
The SEO principles are the same regardless: get found somewhere near the top of the search results, get someone to click through to your site, get them interested enough to contact you. It really is that simple!
We're going to deal with the first part: getting found near the top of the search results.
Do a search for the Google Keyword Tool, click on it and enter a short term relating to your site (printing, EFT, whatever).
Decipher the Captcha and click the search button.
The list that appears is sorted according to how relevant Google thinks the results are. So it's all over the place.
Click the Global Monthly Searches link. This will sort the results in descending order so, for our purposes, you'll need to click it again to sort them in ascending order.
The results are still relevant to your industry but will be ultra low competition. Likely 1 search a day upwards. There'll only be a handful of competing pages for most of these phrases, which is what makes it really simple SEO to do.
Choose a phrase you could natter about and either write a blog post or a short article around that phrase. Drop the phrase into the article two or three times. Post it on your blog or to a site like Articles Base.
Because almost no-one else is targeting that phrase, chances are you'll get shown in the top ten results quite fast.
Sure, you won't get much extra traffic if you only do that once.
But do it once a week or, better yet, once a day and those small drips of visitors will build up into a nice, steady, stream.
Ten of these short articles or blog posts is an easy target to aim for - it sounds achievable (because it is) and it's do-able without much effort. One a day over a cup of coffee will do the trick.
If you're offering a localised service, do the search and sort without your town name and then add your town or suburb name into the post, close to the keyword phrase. It's really simple SEO that anyone can do.
