A good source of information on finch cages

Pet finches make lively, interesting, and cheerful companions. They are a delight to care for, and they make really unique pets. In today's busy world, a finch bird is an idealistic pet for someone who enjoys birds but doesn't have time for the social fundamental interaction that a bird like a bird needs. But in order for them to be happy in our abode, we as pet finch proprietors need to provide the right home for them.

These minuscule, incredible and dynamic birds need a cage that is at least two and a half feet in length. Finches are little birds, so the bars of the cage need to be tight enough together to keep problems for the birds or their escape. Finches are absolutely active and get their exercise by taking flight so it is proposed that the cage supply enough elbow room for that. There needs to be elbow room enough for short flight. Many finch proprietors actually have two cages. One is used to set the birds in while they are cleansing the other cage.

A small number of things need to be supplied within the cage for the birds. Individual finch feeders for food and water should be in the cage at all times. There should also be additional dishes that can be placed in the cage for short periods of time for things like treats and sand. You will also need to offer the finches a little dish to wash in several times a week. Finches will also appreciate a nest box to sleep in. Pet finches also need rods to rest on. Perches for the cage should be of various sizes in order to supply physical exertion for the bird's feet.

Cement poles are beneficial for keeping the toe nails trimmed, but they should not be used alone as they can be tough on their feet. Some finch enthusiasts recommend using natural poles made from the branches of trees like elm tree, maple, pear tree, poplar tree, or cherry red. In the bottom of the cage should be paper scattered with sand, or you can use a grit paper. As a choice you can also attach a bird protector disc to the side of the cage in order to keep mites. But this kind of accessory is completely optional.

One thing that finches will need is playthings within the cage. Finches often like plastic hoops and bells or other glazed objects for amusement. There are many other playthings for birds available in pet shops and retail sales outlets like swings, ladders, beads and mirrors. You can supply your birds with a few playthings at a time and then modify them often to keep things interesting.

The cage should be cleansed at least once a week. Cleansing a cage is a fairy basic process that involves using hot, soapy H2O to thoroughly clean the cage and accessories. They then need to be cleaned and dried out. For an easier time cleansing the cage, you can line the bottom of the cage with paper towels, paper or brown paper bags cut to size.
