The first step in playing the bass is to practice your hands. Hold the neck of the bass while placing your hand all over its body. Then support the neck with your minor hand and feel the excitement and eagerness of learning. But you have to wait for any signal of pressing down any of the strings.
To get started, press down the first string with your major hand. As you notice, the first string is the closest to your body. The thickest and the lowest pitch is the E string. Press the low E string down with your fretting hand when you pluck the string with your major hand.
As you are plucking the first string, try to press the other strings without fretting them. This step is not easy do especially if you are a first-timer. So, you have to practice fretting the strings at some locations in order for you to be familiar with the notes. As what professionals say, the notes are developed by half steps when you move up the neck.
