In 1993, filmmaker Jane Campion stunned the world with her soulful, harrowing portrait of warm-blooded lust, "The Piano." Suffering a few creative setbacks over the years, Campion returns to fertile artistic ground with "Bright Star," a similarly heaved portrait of love's unforgiving boundaries. Lacking a certain spark that justifies its excessive length, "Bright Star" does manage to recharge the director's creative batteries, with material that allows Campion to exercise her amazing ability to depict love's ever scarring touch.
Rango is an animated film starring Johny Depp and directed by Gore Verbinski (who is probably most well known for directing the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films). The movie is the first animated film created by Industrial Lights and Magic (who you may know for their countless contributions to visual effects in live-action films) and is distributed by Nickelodeon. But is Rango something special in the world of animation? Or does its uniqueness go no further than the big names?
Well it won't take long for you to realize this isn't your standard Nickelodeon animated film. Previous efforts(?) such as Jimmy Neutron and Barnyard were passable at the best of times, Rango is something entirely different. It isn't cheap slapstick, wisecracks and bathroom humor (maybe a little on that one, but in more conversational ways), this is a full-blown western through and through, never is it afraid of saying things like "I'll put this bullet through your head" and things of that nature. This is a Nickelodeon movie that adults will probably appreciate more than children.
Rango tells the story of a chameleon (voiced by Johny Depp, in a very unique Johny Depp manner), who prides himself as an actor, with the rest of his "troupe" consisting of a headless, one-armed, no-legged Barbie doll torso and a toy fish. On the road tosomewhere, Rango is tossed out of his owners' vehicle and is stranded in the desert.
