Bacterial vaginosis Causes and Symptoms and Home Remedies to Prevent Bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is a mild infection in the vagina caused by a type of bacteria (germ). The vagina normally contains a lot of "good" bacteria, called lactobacilli (say: "lack-toe bah-sil-li"), and a few other types of bacteria, called anaerobes (say: "ann-air-robes"). Too many anaerobes can cause bacterial vaginosis. It is not known why the anaerobe bacteria overgrow and cause this infection.

Treatment

This condition can be treated with both oral medications and vaginal suppositories. Oral medication can consist of Antibiotics such as clindamycin and metrondiazole. These usually take effect within two to three days of use but are prescribed for use for a seven day period. Vaginal suppositories are prescribed for use over a seven day period as well and are not recommended for pregnant women.

Recurrence is a common incident with bacterial vaginosis, so prevention is done by some women. Preventive measures to avoid the occurrence of bacterial vaginosis would include:

1. Wiping from front to back after bowel movements to prevent bacteria from getting to the vagina

2. Keeping the outside of the vagina dry and clean

3. Avoiding feminine hygiene products and soaps that have strong scents

4. Avoiding fabric that can trap moisture

BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS PREVENTION

The best way to prevent BV is not known. However, a few basic recommendations can be made.

1. Do not douche. Douching is the use of a solution to rinse the inside of the vagina. Some women douche to feel "clean", although there is no proven benefit of douching. The vagina is normally able to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria; douching can upset this balance and potentially flush harmful bacteria into the upper genital tracts (uterus, fallopian tubes).

2. Limit the number of sexual partners. Women with multiple sexual partners are at higher risk of developing bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections.

3. Finish the entire course of treatment for BV, even if the symptoms resolve after a few doses.

Home Remedies for Bacterial vaginosis

1. Yogurt: Cotton plugs soaked in yogurt can either be inserted or yogurt directly applied over the affected area. Treatment with yogurt has been clinically investigated and found to be beneficial in long run as discussed by Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment. Taking bowlful of yogurt daily has also been recommended till the condition disappears.

2. Tea: Take a tea bag, soak in plain water and let it cool for a while in refrigerator. The bag can now be applied externally to relieve itching.

3. Cold water: A cloth soaked in cold water can be laid across the affected area to obtain relief from redness and swelling due to constriction of blood vessels. This is the simplest home remedy for getting rid of pain and burning sensation.

4. Neem powder: Neem has excellent antibacterial properties and is always advised in case of dermatological problems. Taking neem powder can alleviate bacteria from vaginal site.

5. Garlic: Garlic can either be taken raw as capsules (1-2 each day) or applied at vagina. Peeled garlic clove is wrapped in a gauze and try to insert it in vagina. Repeating the treatment after an interval of 3-4 hours helps reducing the infection.

6. Turmeric: Being anti fungal, turmeric power dissolved in milk can be had till the symptoms subside.

7. Tracheal: This natural herb helps remove toxins out of body. One teaspoonful of tracheal dry leaves in a cup of hot water can be had as tea.

8. Vegetable Juice: Vegetable juice containing parsley, ginger and garlic along with green vegetables also has beneficial effect over the pain and itching during conditions of Bacterial vaginitis.

9. Cedar oil: Bathing in hot water with a spoon of salt and few drops of cedar oil in it. Cedar oil helps a lot in itching.
