Gold is the most important thing in the game once you're at the max level, because without it you won't be able to buy new gear, level professions, pay for your raid repairs or even get to level 85.
As a World of Warcraft player, you will be able to find many new ways of making gold in the new Cataclysm expansion quite easy.
NEVER buy gold from gold sellers, Blizzard have started smacking down on both the gold sellers and the gold buyers and the risk of getting banned is greater than ever. And seriously now, why would you waste your hard earned real life cash on such a thing as gold, when it's easily obtainable if you just know the right way.
I'll give you some popular starter tips that can be helpful on making some gold, and this one wont get you banned:)
The first one is quite simple, get a gathering profession(mining, herbalism, skinning) These professions cost just about 0 gold to maintain, and you make a lot of gold while leveling them. The miners will sell their ores/bars to Blacksmiths and Engineers, Skinners to Leatherworkers and Herbalists to Alchemists. You can skinn just about anywhere you go, same with mining and herbalism if you got them toggled to show up on the map.
Fishing is also nice for making gold, you can make quite a nice profit if you fish for pearls. Black pearls can sell for 100-200 gold in cataclysm, depending on server and Golden Pearls go for 100-130.
You can combine your gathering profession with an "creating" professions, such combos would be Mining/Blacksmith or Engineering. Skinning/Leatherworking. Herbalism/Alchemy. At the lower levels gathering will make you the most money, and making a weapon will most times cost more than what it sell for. However, when you get to 350+ it even out, and 450-525 you can make quite big profits for just minutes of work. Some people charge 50-100 gold just for crafting an item, meaning they will bring all the mats to you and just craft it, gaining 50-100g with just standing in a capital city advertising in the trade channel
If you are new to the game and just created a new character, then I would recommend that you go and mine some copper ore, these ones sell for crazy amounts in Cataclysm, I've seen them go for as high as 70 gold per stack on my server, this is what you should do if you haven't yet learned how to play the Auction House.
