Speed
The speed of drill machine is typically measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). Commercial drills will have variable speeds so that a wide range of different surfaces can be worked on successfully. Tackling drilling work generally requires a steady build-up of speed. The initial hole will be prepared with a slow speed action then gradually the speed will be built up to a more effective drilling ratio. Commercial drills require durable power chucks, drills and other components in order to stand up to high speed drilling. These drills will also have fast stop' actions which are a vital way to prevent damage to the machinery of the surface that is being drilled in an emergency situation.
Additional Actions
Commercial drills will typically have a selection of additional actions designed for tackling a wider range of surfaces. This includes a hammer action for drilling into tougher and denser surfaces. These additional actions require different sets of power chucks and attachments (specially toughened in some cases with materials such as tungsten carbide).
