GNS3 is network emulation that you can use build your CCNA lab in order to practice Cisco routers and switches commands. It is recommended to install GNS3 on Linux-based computer for higher performance. However, you can also install it on Windows. The following procedure teaches you how to install GNS3 on a Windows-based computer.
Step 1: Open your favorite web browser such as Mozilla Firefox, open the URL www.gns3.net, and then click on Download in order to download the setup file named GNS3-0.5-win32-all-in-one.exe.
Step 2: Click on either Mirror 1 or Mirror 2 to start downloading GNS3.
Step 3: Click the Save button and then choose a location on your hard drive to save the file.
Step 4: Now, your download will start. Keep in mind that the file size is less than 10 MB and depending your Internet connection speed will acquire less than a minute to finish downloading the file for Cable/DSL connections, and longer than a minute for dial-up connections.
Step 5: Go to the folder where GNS3 installation file is located, and double-click on it to start the installation process. Once the GNS3 Setup Wizard appears, click Next.
Step 6: Click on I Agree to continue.
Step 7: this is optional. You may or not permit GNS3 to create a Start Menu folder by clicking the Next button.
Step 8: For GNS3 to function correctly, you need to install these components: WinPCAP, Dynamips, and Pemuwrapper. Select the component to install, and click the Next button to continue.
Step 9: set the installation folder for GNS3 or keep the default folder, and then click on the Install button to start installing GNS dependent components and then GNS3.
Step 10: In the WinPcap setup wizard, Click on the Next button in order to start installing WinPcap.
Step 11: Click I Agree in order to accept the License Agreement of WinPcap. The installation of WinPcap will begin. Keep in mind that previous installed version of WinPcap must be removed in order to install the newer version.
Step 12: Once WinPcap is installed, the GNS3 Setup Wizard start installing GNS3. Once the GNS3 setup wizard finishes installing GNS3 and its related components, it will invite you to read its Readme file and close the wizard. So, simply click on the Finish button.
