For American Football fans, the Super Bowl is the big of the year. But it's not just sport fans that look forward to the event with growing anticipation. For car manufacturers, it's a big event too a chance to go all-out on advertising in order to show off the upcoming vehicles of the year.
In 2011, the big contenders included brands such as Volkswagen (with a clever and amusing take on Star Wars), Kia, and BMW. What the manufacturers are aiming to do is create a buzz around their vehicle and this year was certainly successful in that respect. One of the most innovative and fun commercials of the 2011 Super Bowl was from Audi, promoting the new A8. The advert takes a cheeky swipe at rival prestige manufacturer Mercedes-Benz and centres around a bid for freedom made by two men trying to escape the confines of luxury.
They break out from their cell and head for the exit, while their captors send Afghan hounds after them and attempt to entice them back by playing Kenny G music. This fails to have any effect and the pair succeed in getting out of the building. One heads straight for a Mercedes, ignoring a warning from the other that it is a trap. Sure enough, the chauffeur drives him straight back into captivity, while the other smarter guy escapes in an Audi A8. The video finishes with the words "Escape the confines of old luxury. The new Audi A8 is here. Luxury has progressed." Prestige car fans will enjoy the little dig at Mercedes-Benz, but the commercial will no doubt throw the A8 into the eyeline of the youth-orientated American audience. With over 900,000 YouTube hits recorded in just a few days, Audi are certainly creating a buzz across the internet.
