All About Pervasive Developmental Disorder

Autism is an abnormal condition in which a child is incapable of doing things apart from a normal development. They are slow-learner in verbal and non-verbal communication. They have single attachment to things and no eye-contact. They also show repetitive behavior like hand-flapping and blank stare to name a few. Aside from Autism, there is also a condition called Autism Spectrum Disorder for less severe cases. In addition to that, Asperger's Disorder exists when verbal and cognitive skills are not affected but non-verbal communications are.

The term Pervasive Developmental Disorder or (PDD) is a condition that involves a postponement in the development like socialization, communication and imagination. Pervasive Developmental Disorder is a condition apart from Autism and Aspergers. Children with PDD are confused and disintegrated with the world. It is most similar to Autism Spectrum Disorder; though symptoms may vary from birth.

PDD child lacks responsiveness and focus. They are silent, withdrawn and act strangely to people. In some cases, a child does not speak at all, others can at one phrase and a few have normal language. On the other hand, a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder does head-banging, bite himself and pulls his hair if frustrated. They may be hyperactive and, impulsive. PDD patient has no cure. Medication available is support for their behavior and benefited mostly in a specialized classroom.

Researchers are still looking for the possible causes of PDD. They are now studying the brain of a PDD patient for possible clues to better familiarize and to discover ways to treat this condition. Some physician suggests it is in the nervous system. Until the causes of Pervasive Developmental Disorder are detected, it cannot be prevented.

The following are some of a plan of care to a child with PDD: First is the special education; which is designed to meet the education needs of the child. Second is the behavior modification. It is designed to strategize the behavior of the child. Lastly are speech, physical and occupational therapy. It is used to enhance the child's skill. With early detection and intervention, a child can live a normal life; early detection is important.
