In October 2005, after Six Feet Under's series finale, Ball signed a two-year agreement with HBO to develop and produce original programming for the network. True Blood became the first project under the deal, after Ball became acquainted with Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mystery books. One day, while early for a dental appointment, Ball was browsing through Barnes and Noble and came across Dead Until Dark, the first installment in Harris's series. Enjoying it, he read the following entries and became interested in "bringing [Harris's] vision to television". However, Harris already had two other adaptation options for the books. He said she chose to work with him, though, because "[Ball] really got me. Thats how he convinced me to go with him. I just felt that he understood what I was doing with the books. Since a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many people remain apprehensive about vampires living amongst them in Louisiana.
A local barmaid, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) understands what it's like to be an outcast. Cursed with the ability to listen in on people's thoughts, she's also open-minded about the integration of vampires. She is especially intrigued by Bill(Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year-old living up the road. But as Sookie is drawn into a series of mysteries surrounding Bill's arrival in Bon Temps, that tolerance will be put to the test. Season two delves into the mythology of demons. We have vampires being persecuted by the followers of the sun. Sookie's relationship with Bill is tested as she begins to get a taste of Eric (Alexander Skarsgard). Godric is introduced as Eric's maker. Eric is thrown into the deep end trying to save Godric. Jason begins to find himself.
