This past weekend hardcore college basketball handicappers were glued to their television sets, as they took in the Bracket Busters Tournament. The tournament is held every year during the second last weekend of February, to showcase schools placed in smaller conferences. Conference, the Bracket Busters Tournament allowed it the opportunity to showcase its talents. One team from the CAA that really dominated the tournament was Old Dominion. Here is a recap of the tournament.
Old Dominion played in the last game of the Bracket Buster's tournament weekend, taking on Horizon League Conference leader Cleveland State. The Old Dominion Monarchs were able to defeat the top ranked Cleveland State squad 74 63 in Norfolk, despite a first half in which Cleveland State had the Old Dominion fan base happy they just made it to half time. What's more, the first half of the game could essentially be termed the Norris Cole show, as Cleveland's State's starting point guard had 24 of the team's 28 first half points.
However, in the second half, Old Dominion realized that Cleveland State was a one trick pony with Cole, and essentially how Cole went so too did Cleveland State. Meaning to say, in the second half, Old Dominion flexed its muscles as they out rebounded Cleveland State 51 to 22, en route to winning the game 74 63.
The victory improved Old Dominion's record to 22 wins and six losses. It was also the coming out party for Old Dominion stars forwards Frank Hassel and Ben Finney. The duo combined for 28 of the team's 51 rebounds in the game. Cleveland State was held to five points with seven and a half minutes remaining in the game.
With upcoming games against James Madison and William & Mary, Old Dominion will have to continue its dominant ways if it hopes to make the March Madness tournament. After such an incredible defensive game against Cleveland State, we would hate to be the school that has to take on Old Dominion in round one of the March Madness tournament.
