If you use Excel 2007, you'll need to click on the Office button followed by Excel Options. Now, find the Resources area, click it and look for "run Microsoft Office Diagnostics." Click the Diagnose button and follow the prompt. This tool runs a battery of tests on Excel and helps you to fix Excel program errors.
Like Detect and Repair, if your copy of Excel will not open due to the nature of its program errors, you have options. You can launch Word or Outlook and access the Microsoft Office Diagnostics tool from within one of these programs or you can launch the tool directly.
