Grandma's medical alarmsystem is truly the only thing that lets her feel safe living alone. This is how my friend related her story about Grandma: http://www.seniorsafety.com/medical-alert-life-line-info/medical-alarm/
"A few months ago, my Grandpa was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Needless to say, this was a devastating blow to the entire family. It was especially hard on my Grandma, not only emotionally, but physically. Up until this point, my Grandpa was my Grandma's primary caretaker.
She has terrible hip pain and can only walk with two canes. My Grandpa usually cooks for her, and does all the driving and shopping. However, now that he has cancer he is too weak to do all of those previously easy chores. He is currently been in and out of the hospital, while my Grandma is pretty much stuck at home.
Since she is quite immobile on her own, I suggested she get a medical alarm. She did not know much about these medical alert devices, but I did a quite a bit of research for her. All she has to do is wear a medical alert necklace or wristband. If she has fallen and can't get up, or has any other type of emergency, she can stay as she is and doesn't need to reach for the phone. Instead, she can press her medical alarm and give a first alert to a monitoring center that will communicate with her via a speaker box that is included in the medical alarm package. If she tells them she needs help, or if she is unresponsive, the monitoring center will immediately dispatch the paramedics.
This has been such a great tool for her and has been a great source of relief for my mother and I. We don't have to worry quite as much about her since we know she has a service to protect her. The hardest part of the whole thing honestly, was convincing my Grandma that she needed the device to begin with.
My Grandma is very stubborn and at times doesn't realize how incapable she really is. But when she saw us watch her take over fifteen minutes to walk from one room to another, it finally sunk in it that a senior monitoring system is what she needs.
At first, she did resent wearing the medical alarm pendant, but after only a few days she forgot she was wearing it! Out of all the medical alarm companies I researched, the best ones use break away chains for the medical alert necklaces. This is really important because if an elderly person falls and their necklace gets caught, you certainly don't want the senior to choke! The breakaway chain insures that this doesn't happen.
As I mentioned, I did so much research, that I actually had a hard time when it came to choosing which medical alarm company to go with! At the end of the day, I ended up choosing the company that treated me the best. Some were cheaper than others, and I trusted all of them. But I had to choose to the company that gave me the best serviceafter all, they will be providing a service for my Grandma and I want her to be in good hands.
Now, my Grandma wears her pendant daily and is thankful she has one."
