Moving Abroad: A Checklist from International Movers

Moving is stressful. Even if that move is right around the block, it's stressful. But moving across seas? That's enough stress to cause a stroke. Isn't it? Well, while it's certainly a big move, it doesn't have to be as stressful as you think. After all, you're just crossing some imaginary lines and settling on a new land mass right? Okay, it's a little more technical than that, but there are international movers that can make this move a lot less stressful. Here are a few friendly remindersa checklist, if you willto help you get organized for your international move.

Actually, before we get into the list, let's make one thing clear: START PLANNING EARLY. Okay, now that you know to START PLANNING EARLY, we can get into the list.

Research Your New Country's Regulations

Call the relevant embassy or consulate. It's the easiest way to get this done. Make sure you ask about the following:

required visas and permits

required vaccines for family members

restrictions or taxes on shipped household items

taxes involved in shipping your car

required vaccines and quarantines for pets.

Passports, Visas, and Permits

Make sure you have an up-to-date passport. And if it's going to expire soon, save yourself some stress and renew it. Also, make sure you get all visas and permits as soon as possible.

Gather Important Documents

Organization is the key to reducing stress. Make sure you have all the documents you need. It could take several weeks to get official copies of vital records and other documents. Consider bringing:

Birth and Marriage Certificates

Naturalization, Green Card, Proof of Citizenship, etc.

Social Security Cards

Vaccination, Medical and Dental Records

Academic Records and Diplomas

Employment Records

Proof of Residency (utility bill, statement, etc.)

Living Will and Testament

International Driving Permit

If you're driving license is going to expire soon, make sure you renew it. Then, obtain an international driving permit. This way you won't be restricted in your new country.

Banks and Credit Cards

Decide which accounts you need to keep open, and notify them that you'll be overseas. Also, to avoid confusion, notify credit card companies of your move.

International Moving Companies

Surely, you won't be making this move alone. Make sure you interview multiple international moving companies. There are a number of international moving companies out there, but you need to find one that suits you and your needs. Make sure your international moving company is bonded and insured, at the very least. Also, be sure to review all their policies.

Pack Wisely

Only bring what you need. Moving is expensive as it is. Moving across seas isn't any cheaper. Pack light and you can get the rest when you're settled in at your new home.

VOIP Phone Service

Naturally, you'll want to get in contact with your friends and family back home. And, hopefully, they'll want to get in touch with you. VOIP phone services allow you to do so without incurring international long distance fees.
