Normal pronation, when walking, is when your foot lands on the outside edge and then rolls inward. Some runner's feet roll inward too much. This is called overpronation. Some footwear is designed lessen this condition.

The way to find out if you overpronate is to grab some of your footwear. Set them on the table, soles flat, toes away from you, and heels toward you. Look at how they sit on the table. If they are leaning in on each other and you can see the inside soles worn away, you overpronate. The more severe the wear and leaning, the more severe the condition. Motion control in footwear is best for this condition.

Conversely supination or underpronation the foot rolls outward or does not pronate. You will see wear on soles, at the outside of each heel, as well as the entire outside length of the sole. You will also see that the shoe side will be stretched out past the sole. Lightweight footwear, with curved lasts, and flexible arch are best suited for this type of foot strike.

Cushioned footgear is for people who do not overpronate. They have medium to high arches and need high midsole cushioning. There is little arch support.

Motion Control. Look for this construction when a moderate to severe overpronation. The motion of the heel turning in is controlled with some support in the arch. This construction is good for low arches and for people who are big or heavy.

Performance Trainers are lightweight and used for training. This type can also be use for speedwork and racing. This shoe type is for runners who do not overpronate or who are moderate overpronators.

Racing. People who have normal pronation can use this lightweight product for racing or training. Because of light construction these should not be used if any injuries are present. Use performance trainers or regular training footwear if you have an injury.

Stability footwear is for people who need arch support but cushioning on the rest of the mid-sole. Good for people who need more support and durability. Slight to moderate overpronators will do well in this type.
