The Power of Storytelling Comes to Adelphi University and Waldorf School of Garden City

The event is described as "a celebration of the spoken word," and will take place from Friday, March 4 to Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Adelphi University's Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY, and the Waldorf School of Garden City, 225 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY.

The purpose of this conference is to offer participants a break from technology-based society while exploring arts and creativity. The Ruth S. Ammon School of Education is taking this opportunity to introduce their new English and Theater Education program as well, which ties into the practice of storytelling and performance. The event is geared toward teachers, teachers-in-training, parents, librarians, community leaders, artists, health practitioners, and storytelling aficionados.

"Today we are losing many connections between human beings and aspects of culture that we previously took for granted," said Leonore Russell, director of the Winkler Center for Adult Learning at adjunct professor of art education at Adelphi. "Through the spoken word we move from our inner world to our outer connections and bonds with others; family, friendships, and working relationships."

Participants will come away with improved storytelling ability, a stronger awareness of mental imagery, greater knowledge and respect for stories from different cultures and viewpoints, and a heightened appreciation for the power of the spoken word. Ms. Russell says that participants will also find "the confidence to speak their truth."

The weekend-long conference will include keynotes by international author, storyteller, and former Waldorf School teacher Nancy Mellon. There will also be a number of engaging workshops led by international storytellers such as Elizabeth Haile, Glen Williamson, and Heather Forest, among others.
