Homer Alaska is wonderful place to spend your vacation maybe you have dreamed of catching a giant halibut, I have fished all over Alaska in my opinion there is no better place then homer to fish for halibut, just take a walk down to the local docks and you well see why its called halibut heaven,
Homer is famous for there halibut, averaging 20 to 40 pounds with fish in the 200 to 300 pounds being very common with even larger fish being caught on occasion.
Homer is about a 3 to 4 hour drive from anchorage the road is well maintained, it's a beautiful drive, let me suggest a few places to stop along the way to make your Alaska vacation a memorable experience, there are many wonderful places to visit.
As you head south from anchorage on the seward highway you well first come to bird creek its about 30 minutes out of anchorage, there is parking before and after the bridge the creek runs under the highway, If you're not in a hurry to get to homer this is an excellent place to stop, there are lots of pink salmon and also some silver salmon. Parking is $5.00 for the day.

continuing south on the seward highway you well pass portage glacier it is approximately 30 minutes off the main highway but I would say make the trip its very beautiful, if you head past the glacier you can drive to Whittier through the mountain tunnel there are many charter company's here for fishing or sightseeing,
About 100 miles from anchorage you well turn onto the sterling highway to head for homer here you are 30 minutes from seward, There are plenty of things to do in seward, sight seeing, whale watching, fishing charters, there is also the Alaska sealife center another place I recommend seeing. http://www.alaskasealife.org
back on the highway heading to homer you well pass the Russian river famous for the red salmon run, another great place to spend the afternoon, don't expect to get away from the crowds here it is usually over crowded with fishermen fighting for there spot on the river.
After leaving the Russian river the highway passes through Soldotna there are some great places to fish there you can ask any of the locals and they can direct you to some popular fishing spots.
You are still another 2 hours from homer here is a list of other places you might want to stop, deep creek, Ninilchik, clam gulch.
When you get to homer there are many charter fishing companies ranging in the price from $125.00 to $200.00, there are many nice hotels starting at $75.00 a night there is also RV parking and camping on the beach, I hope this well be helpful for you to have a great Alaska vacation.
