Have you ever been out to other people's houses and thought that the air there smelt nice and fresh and healthy whilst at home there always seemed to be different kinds of nasty smells? Let us try to help get your home cleaner and one to be proud of as well.
Possibly one of the most difficult areas to keep smelling fresh is the kitchen as a lot of cooking can produce obnoxious smells from appliances such as microwave ovens.
After you have prepared onion or garlic you should wash your hands as soon as possible in cold water. Hot water has the opposite effect and makes the smell linger longer.
When cabbage is cooking it is a good idea to either put a slice of stale bread or add a little fresh lemon juice into the water. Either will stop the nasty smell from spreading around.
Chopping boards do tend to hold on to the smell of the food that has been prepared on them. Rub coarse salt on a wooden chopping board and then rinse with water or rub some bicarbonate of soda into it and then wash thoroughly with soap and water.
Vinegar is very useful to absorb a lot of smells. Keep some in a saucer on the work surface and the smell will be absorbed and not spread around the rest of the house. It would also help to get rid of the smell of cigarette smoke if people are smoking.
If you have been cooking fish in a frying pan, put in a mixture of boiling water and salt and then leave it for a while. If you frying your fish, put a couple of sticks of celery into the oil. When washing up after a fish meal, a drop of vinegar will get rid of the smell of china and a drop of mustard will clear it from cutlery.
Smells can often be trapped in the refrigerator and you must remember to clean that regularly. There are four things that you can try to get rid of them - baking soda, crumpled newspaper, cat litter or charcoal. If none of them succeed sometimes the sterilising fluid that you use in a baby's bottle will do the trick.
Another area where smells can linger is when you have pets. They have a nasty habit of leaving their smell around even though they are not unclean animals.
In the bathroom you can light a match and let it burn out. Make sure it is completely out though before you leave. To keep the musty smell away from clothes in a wardrobe put some bath salts on the floor.
You can now invite your friends over for a meal and you house will be as pleasant as theirs.
